Audi puts CVT in A8

26 August 2003: Audi is to show two new versions of the A8 luxury car, including one with a CVT automatic transmission, the first such transmission in a large luxury car.

The cars' powertrains are 3-litre V6 petrol and diesel engines. The common rail 3.0-litre TDI creates the first ever EU4-compliant D-segment diesel, and its figures are 233PS @ 4,000rpm, 450Nm from 1,400 to 3,250rpm. It can do 0-100 km/h in 7.8 secs, and returns a combined mpg of 31.7.

The 3.0-litre petrol unit outputs 220PS @ 6,300rpm, 300Nm @ 3,200rpm, 0-100 km/h in 7.9 secs, and returns 29.4mpg.
