Berlingo Multispace freshened, safer

26 November 2002: Citroen's Berlingo Multispace van-based MPV has been given a facelift which includes a new front, revised interior, more equipment and improved safety levels, and other enhancements. The 'funkier' front end has deep wraparound bumpers, squared-off clear lens headlamps, a new grille, bonnet and front wings, plus front fog lamps.

Inside, there is a completely redesigned, colour-coded dashboard and dials, with a digital display screen, aluminium effect air vents and more ergonomic controls.

There's new patterned seat trim and new stowage areas around the cabin, and the option of aircraft style trays on the back of the front seats.

The Multispace range gains, for the first time, many of the benefits of digital multiplex wiring, such as ‘guide-me-home’ headlamps and progressive dimming of the cabin lights. Other available functions are a key fob operated ‘location’ facility, speed sensitive stereo volume and automatic locking of the doors when the vehicle is in motion.

The body structure has been reinforced and redesigned, and the raised bonnet has allowed the engine to be relocated, improving both occupant and pedestrian protection in the event of an impact. There's a new, larger volume driver’s airbag, front seat belt pre-tensioners with force limiters, three 3-point rear seat belts, height adjustable head restraints all round and, on petrol versions, automatic activation of the hazard warning lights on heavy braking.

The sliding side doors are equipped with safety mechanisms to prevent them from being accidentally closed, or accidentally opened when the fuel tank is being filled.
