1 August 2002: What was widely anticipated to be a Daewoo-badged SsangYong SUV, the luxury Rexton, has been launched in Ireland by Daewoo under the SsangYong brand.
The Rexton has gone on sale at a price of 44,495 euros for the 2.9-litre diesel version and 50,790 for the petrol vehicle.
The diesel power is a Mercedes-Benz M290 unit and the Rexton has shift on the fly capability from 2WD to 4WD. An automatic option is available.
Safety features include ABS, traction control system, dual airbags and side-impact protection and the Rexton has achieved a five-star rating in the US NHTSA crash tests in frontal and side impact. Climate control, leather seat upholstery, alloy wheels, electric front and rear windows and RDS radio/CD stack player are luxury features.
SsangYong Motors was established in 1954, and is recognised as a specialist manufacturer of 4-wheel drive SUVs in Korea. In 1991 SsangYong concluded a strategic partnership with Mercedes-Benz AG in the joint development of engine technology and LCVs. Some of the better known SsangYong SUV models include the Korando and the Musso, which are also distributed here as Daewoos.
