Honda shows new SUV in US

8 January 2002: Honda has introduced a pre-production version of an all-new SUV - the Pilot - at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

It will go on sale in the summer of 2002, the company says.

The Pilot, which is based on the MDX from Honda's luxury Acura division, will have seating for up to eight passengers, a six-cylinder engine and a four-wheel drive system.

It will have more than eight inches of ground clearance, short front and rear overhangs, a widest-in-class wheel track and an electronically locking differential mechanism, the US division of Honda said in a statement.

Production details, including pricing, will be released later.
