Mazdaspeed 323 is real zoom-zoom

20 August 2002: A Mazda 323 that almost out-WRXes Subaru? With a 6.9-sec 0-60mph and 170bhp? That’s not zoom-zoom, that’s Mazdaspeed.

And it’s American, so 323 doesn’t come into the equation. The model is called Protegé across the Atlantic and held in high esteem for its build and reliability.

And is rapidly building a reputation as one which has really hot potential.

Now they’ve turbocharged the 2-litre engine, added stronger drivetrain components and a limited-slip diff that sends uniform punch to both front wheels.

Larger 17-inch wheels and bigger brakes, along with firmed up suspension, with sharpened steering allows the Mazdaspeed Protegé to pull .88g on a skidpan.

And what about the Spicy Orange Mica paintwork? Yes, I think you WOULD prefer the black option.

And if you lived in the land of the mica-spangled banner, it would only set you back the equivalent of 20,000 euros.

That’s more sickmaking than the paint job.
