Hyundai's Kia subsidiary might take over here

08 October 2003: Hyundai's Kia subsidiary has given a broad hint that it might take over distribution of Kia cars in Ireland.

This follows the purchase by the company of some of its importers in other European countries, including Britain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Belgium.

Vice president of Kia Motors Europe Jean-Charles Lievens says the company wants to increase sales in Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland.

Kia in Ireland is currently distributed by Harris Auto. Sales have been slow.

Lievens said that after the European company has 'digested' its recent takeovers, it will then 'come to other markets'.

Kia plans to launch 17 new models over the next three years.
