Hyundai launches Terracan in Ireland

1 January 2002: Hyundai Ireland has launched the all-new Terracan bringing the marque to the mainstream segment of mid-size SUVs. It fits into the company’s lineup above the Santa Fe, which has itself gained 14% of the Irish SUV market in just 18 months.

The Terracan will include the all-new 2.9 litre TCI diesel engine, featuring Delphi’s very latest common rail injection system. Standard equipment includes twin airbags, Pioneer CD player and alloy wheels. Terracan will be available in passenger and commercial version.

The car’s front view is dominated by a large, bodycolor radiator grille with rugged type vertical slates and the oval ‘H’ medallion at its centre. There’s a substantial area of glass, and standard exterior features include roof rails and front fog lights and electrically adjustable heated mirrors.

Inside, the Terracan offers an array of storage options from door map pockets, seatbackpockets to seat under trays and centre armrest storage consoles and rear compartment storage luggage net with luggage hooks. Other interior features include dual power outlets, front and rear, interior lamps and electric tilting and sliding sunroof.

Safety features include full size dual supplemental restraint systems employing the latest dual sensing depowered technology, a 60-litre driver side airbag and 130-litre passenger side airbag. There’s also 4- sensor 3 channel ABS with EBD.

The engine’s maximum power rating is 110ps@3800rpm while 34kg.m of torque is served up at a very low 2000rpm. Drivers have a choice of 5 speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic is also available as an option. The Terracan 4 WD comes with Active Torque Transfer (ATT). Using an electronic control system, ATT provides power only to the rear wheels in normal driving conditions. Once slippage is detected, 4 WD is engaged electronically and power and torque are automatically transferred to the front wheels as needed. In extreme driving conditions the driver can choose to manually switch from Auto to 4 L drive mode.

The passenger version 2.9 litre Terracan will retail at EUR 40,634 while the commercial version Terracan will retail at EUR 30,475.
