Insurance campaigners welcome Hibernian scheme

30 August 2001: MIJAG - the Motor Insurance Justice Action Group - has broadly welcomed the announcement by Hibernian to enter the young driver insurance market.

"Young male drivers with a full-licence and one year's driving experience could potentially get insured for £1,871, which is £2,000 less than the going rate," said Mick Murphy the National Organiser of MIJAG. "The idea of giving a 20% discount to people for doing the one-day training course with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is certainly to be welcomed, and is a very good example of how to give an incentive to improve road safety."

Mr Murphy also said the move by Hibernian is 'clear recognition that young drivers are being ripped off'. "We still believe the Government needs to stepin and lay down the law in order to insure fair play for young drivers," he said, "and to link insurance premiums to a person's safety record as opposed to their age."
