Pay up or we'll crush your car

11 August 2004: An 'insure it or we'll crush it' trial in West Yorkshire may be extended across Britain in the drive to cut uninsured driving.

At any one time, an estimated 5 per cent of drivers in Britain are driving without insurance, while 15 per cent of drivers in a survey admitted having driven uninsured at some stage in theor lives.

An independent report by Professor David Greenaway, a professor of economics at Nottingham University, calls for better detection of uninsured driving and a wider range of penalties.

In West Yorkshire seized cars are impounded and drivers must pay £105 and show proof of insurance to get their car back - otherwise it will be crushed.
