Sending off the E200,000 "Footsteps of Joey Dunlop Relief Convoy" to Estonia from Crosson Opelcentre, Sandyford Industrial Estate were Mary Elliott, Cathaoirleach, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council; John O’Reilly, Managing Director Crosson Group; John Maher, Managing Director Opel Ireland; Krista Kilvet, Estonian Charge d’Affairs; and Sean Crosson, Chairman, Crosson Group.

30 June 2003: As the third anniversary of motorbike racing icon Joey Dunlop’s death approaches, a group of Irish motorcyclists are retracing another wheeled accomplishment of the champion with a convoy of vans and bikes to deliver relief aid for some 240 poor children in five orphanages across Estonia.

The event is being undertaken with the support of Joey’s wife Linda and their family,

Joey Dunlop won 26 Isle of Man TT races. Off the track, he quietly undertook children’s charity missions to Estonia.

At Crosson Opelcentre on Sandyford Industrial Estate last Wednesday, Dublin Lord Mayor Dermot Lacey was among a distinguished group who waved off the group of Joey Dunlop fans on their 4,000 mile round trip. The convoy is led by Fr Tony Conlon, Garda Adrian O’ Gorman, and IT specialist Gerald Donnelly of the Lost Riders Motorcycle Club of Ireland.

The trip follows as closely as possible the original route taken by Joey across Europe many times delivering badly needed provisions to five orphanages in Estonia.

The 15-strong group of bikers are leading three Opel Vivaro vanloads of equipment that includes nappies, 25 wheel chairs (10 motorised) plus cloths, toys and games. The trip will take 12 days to complete.

"Joey was a man for all seasons and all people and I consider it a real privilege to be part of this event," said Fr Tony Conlon, chaplain of Beaumont Hospital and a founder member of The Lost Bikers MCC. "We’ve been overwhelmed by the extent of the donations by so may people. Through their generosity ‘The Lost Riders’ will bring badly needed supplies and toys to so many young children who have not been as blessed or fortunate as we are."

John Maher, Managing Director Opel Ireland, said the company is 'very privilaged' to sponsor the resurgance of Joey Dunlop's humanitarian endeavours.
