7 October 2002: David Lyons from Clarina, Co. Limerick scored his best ever result to secure his first victory of the season on the sixth and penultimate round of the highly competitive 2002 Ford Ireland KA Rally Championship, at the Murphy Construction Cork International Rally.
David in the Ryan and Roberts Crane Hire Ford KA decided that the Murphy Construction Cork 20 International Rally would have a 'sting in the tail'. Tactics were the order of the day and David played himself in gently, settling into a secure third position overall out of seven crews on the opening leg of the two-day International Rally.
Experience is everything in Motorsport and Davids predictions came through when leader Kenneth Mulvaney retired on stage six moving David into second overall. David sensing victory started his attack setting three fastest KA stage times. Disaster struck for leader Eivers on the final stage of Day one when he slid off the road and into retirement. David moved into a comfortable lead, which he held until the finish to secure his major victory.
