Change of fortunes for Keohane

4 September 2001: A last minute change of fortunes on Sunday at Thruxton, Hampshire, saw Ireland's Michael Keohane take his fourth British F3 Scholarship victory with what was undoubtedly the best drive of his racing career.

Struggling with the set-up on his Toyota powered Dallara F398 all weekend, victory seemed well out of reach for the 21 year old from West Cork as he could only manage 8th and 7th quickest times respectively during qualifying at Britain's fastest circuit.

Hosting a record-breaking three British F3 Championship races, following the addition of the cancelled Knockhill round to the timetable, the first race of the weekend on Saturday evening saw the Ibstock Brick backed driver finish 4th despite the continuing handling problems.

Changes to the set-up of the car ahead of Race 2 on Sunday morning were unable to improve things. Benefiting from a first lap incident, Michael could only manage a 5th place finish in the 21 lap encounter.

Driving for Meritus Racing, Race 3 brought about a total change of fortunes for the former Irish kart Champion. The arduous efforts of his team saw the handling of the car completely transformed for the final race for which Michael lined up 8th on the grid.

Round 22 of the prestigious F1 feeder series, Michael put in a sensational drive setting fastest lap on only his second tour as he stormed through the field snatching the lead from championship leader Robbie Kerr on lap 5 of 17. Chased by the Englishman, the Clonakilty star held off the challenge to claim his fourth and most impressive F3 victory to-date.

Overjoyed with the result Michael, whose F3 campaign is also supported by Clonakilty Black Pudding, said, 'That was the most satisfying race I have ever driven. I don't think anyone would have bet on us winning here today especially starting from the fourth row. I have to thank Sean (Thompson) and the rest of the team (Meritus Racing) who never gave up on getting the car right'.

The championship returns to Brands Hatch, Kent, next on September 15/16th for the penultimate round of the PowerTour Package when Michael will aim to add further wins to his tally.
