01 April 2003: The new version Lexus RX300 may well be the safest premium SUV in the world when it comes to Ireland next month, given that it comes with nine airbags as standard including the first knee-airbag to be provided on an SUV on this side of the world.
But the Irish Lexus owners who will be looking at demonstration RX300s over these next few weeks will probably be more struck by the significant change in styling, which makes it much more 21st century and certainly different from anything else in its segment.
Since it made its European debut in 2000, more than 200 copies have been sold in Ireland, and worldwide it is the best-selling luxury SUV.
A series of introduction events are being held this month in Irish Lexus dealerships, prior to the full launch of the car in early May.
The latest RX300 has significantly improved fuel economy, a 5-speed sequential shift gearbox, and even higher levels of Lexus luxury and refinement than the outgoing car.
The new version is longer and wider than its predecessor, and an extra length to the wheelbase allows for better inside room and luggage space.
The 3-litre V6 engine in this market has more power and torque than has been available previously. And a new driveline, utilising front/rear torque distribution electronically controlled by the traction control system (TRC), replaces the previous mechanical limited slip differential, to provide smooth traction even if the throttle pedal is used roughly.

The RX300 Executive will retail at E67,150 making it E1,000 less than the outgoing model, despite having over E6,500 more equipment including 17-inch six-spoke alloy wheels, 5-speed sequential gearbox, 8 speakers, centre dash 6-CD changer, High Intensity Discharge head lamps, head lamp cleaners, 40/20/40 split rear seat, roof rails, perforated leather and a rear spoiler.
"This car is another example of the innovation which makes Lexus one of the most exciting brands in Europe, said Mark Teevan, Managing Director of Lexus Ireland. With its launch, the new generation rx300 is set to
redefine the segment, dramatically changing all standards in premium SUV styling, technology, refinement and performance.
