McCarthy waits to see final placing in L-R challenge

Paul McCarthy directs teammate Kitt Springer in an exercise in precision driving on the penultimate day of the Land Rover G4 Challenge.

26 April 2003: Kerryman Paul McCarthy is waiting this morning to find out how well he has done in this final stage of the Land Rover G4 Global Challenge, which finishes today in Moab in Utah with a head-to-head of the individual contestants to finalise their scores.

There's strong speculation that the Ventry stonemason could make the top four of the 16 finalists from 16 countries who have spent the last month driving and undertaking endurance and adventure tasks in the eastern US, South Africa, Australia, and finally in the past week amongst the stunning canyons of south Utah.

McCarthy was teamed with Canadian Kitt Springer for this week, and their tasks in the event included mountaineering, rock scrambling, mountain-biking in the heat of the desert, abseiling, and running, with driving and nivigation tasks included in all.

"I'm not that worried about the result," he said last night. "I've had a great time, and now I'm going to chill out for a couple of weeks with friends in Los Angeles."

In today's 'Seperators' finale, the individual contestants from 16 countries will undertake another round of endurance and skill tests, though they've not been told what these involve.

The winner of this first G4 Challenge gets to bring home a new Range Rover.
