Luxury sales ease car tax slump

29 August 2003: Luxury car sales in Ireland could be propping up Irish exchequer funds more than the performance of the overall car market would suggest, according to Fiat Auto Ireland MD Michael Howe.

The strong sales performance of cars such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class against a car market that is currently down by 6.5 per cent might well mean that the Government tax take on cars sales is only down by around 2 per cent he said this week.

He was speaking at the Irish press launch of the upgraded Fiat Punto, which goes on sale in mid-September.
