1 May 2001: A new Mazda 323 estate is among models which have been shown to selected journalists around the world as an indicator of what way the company is looking to its future.
The car borrows many of the styling cues unveiled on the RX-8 coupé at the Detroit Motor Show in January and shown in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show. There will also be new 323s in hatchback and saloon form, and a new 626 expected towards the end of next year.
The 626 is described as having 'bold new looks' and will be fresh against the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen's Passat. A sporty version may tempt buyers of the Subaru Impreza. The 626 will also be offered in estate form, based on the radical MX Sport Tourer concept unveiled at this year's Geneva Motor Show.
Engines in the new Mazdas will range from a 1.4-litre 72bhp engine for the 323 up to a 194bhp 3.0-litre V6 24v for the 626. A variety of diesel units will also be available, including a 162bhp 2.3-litre VVT Di and advanced 1.6 and 2.0-litre common-rails for both models.
A third-generation RX-7 is forecast for production in 2004, sharing a platform with the RX-8, powered by a Renesis rotary engine delivering 280bhp. BB
