Mazda to unveil powerful MX-5

3 September 2001: Mazda will reveal a high-performance concept of the MX-5 roadster at the Frankfurt Show on September 11.

This special MX-5 has the designation ‘MPS’ which indicates Mazda Performance Series.

The MPS concept features numerous performance, functional and design enhancements. These include racing technology from Mazda Speed, an affiliate of Mazda Motor Corporation and winner of the 1991 Le Mans 24-hour rade.

The 1,930cc engine produces maximum output of 147kw/ at 7,000rpm and maximum torque of 196Nm at 6,000rpm. It also comes with 17-inch tyres and large-diameter brake rotors.

A newly designed ‘face’ gives a larger air intake area and improved cooling. New front and rear overfenders provide for a more aggressive, lower and wider appearance.

The interior features a sporty design with black Alumite-finish metallic parts and combination black buckskin and Alcantara fabric.

Also on display at Frankfurt will be a special MPS version of the 323, plus two other special concept models: the rotary-powered RX-8 sports coupe and the MX Sport Tourer. TW
