Mazda growing fastest in Europe

17 April 2003: Mazda has become the fastest-growing Japanese brand in Europe, notching up a 33.5 per cent increase in sales in the first quarter of 2003, while the total market slumped by 2.4 per cent.

Japanese cars as a whole have seen sales increase by 5.9 per cent in units to a 12.1 per cent share of the market.

Mazda sales in Western Europe in March were up 20 per cent over March 2002 at 22,300 against 18,579 last March, according to the latest provisional figures from ACEA, the European automobile constructors' association.

In Europe, Mazda's target is 210,000 this year, rising to 300,000 in the medium term.

The Mazda2, built in Valencia, Spain, and the new RX-8 sports car are due soon in Ireland.

The all-new Mazda 3 – previewed as the MX Sportif at the Geneva motor show -- is due at the end of 2003.
