Powerful Mazda6 concept for Paris

4 September 2002: A concept car based on the Mazda6 - the MPS - to be shown at the Paris Show at the end of this month is powered by a 280ps version of the 2.3-litre engine powering the high end of the current car.

It also incorporates some styling detail changes, including a new version of the five-pointed grille as well as an air intake design similar to the one featured on the upcoming new RX-8 rotary-engined sports car.

An enlarged front bumper and a rear spoiler both play an aerodynamic role and there's a new type of paintwork called "Silver Storm" with a subtle shine.

The Mazda6 MPS comes with a keyless entry system and a simple button with which to start the engine. The 4WD used in the Mazda6 is combined in the MPS with an active torque control. The result is an electronically controlled torque-split 4WD system that is suitable for high performance cars and gives precise tire-to-road contact even at high revs.
