29 January 2002: A problem with exploding batteries in Mercedes C-Class cars in the US has resulted in at least one injury.
The problem occurred when fluid levels in the batteries fell to low levels, and six batteries are on record as having exploded in a US market segment of 65,000 C-Class cars made between 1998-1999. All the cars have been recalled for checking.
The US National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration has asked M-B to improve the battery tunings.
