Merc to abandon superchargers

13 August 2004: Mercedes-Benz is to drop superchargers in favour of turbocharging, beginning with a 2-litre turbocharged engine for its new A Class (above) in the autumn.

The company has been using superchargers since the early 90s, the engines with the technology being badged as Kompressor.

The decision to switch to turbocharging reflects the significant improvement in turbochargers, which used to suffer from a response lag in operation.
