Autoboxes go 7-speed

25 September 2003: New 7-speed automatic transmissions have been developed by both Mercedes-Benz and German gearbox maker ZF.

According to the carmaker, the seventh gear improves fuel consumption by up to half a litre per 100 km. It also contributes to smoother shifts as the falloff in rpm between each change is smaller.

The Mercedes transmission will be standard equipment in the E-Class, S-Class, CL and SL cars using V8 engines.
