Compact MPV sector faces big growth

14 April 2003: The MPV segment is expected to grow from its current 1.25 million units annually in Europe to 2.3 million by 2007. Some 80 per cent of the sales will be in the compact and small MPV segment.

That's why Opel is feeling so bullish about its potential in the MPV drive, expecting to sell between 150,000-180,00 copies a year of its new Meriva (above) and also build on its existing success with the Astra-based Zafira.

The Meriva goes on sale in Ireland at the end of this month, at a starting price of E19,700 ... E5,000 more than the same vehicle sells at in Germany, all of which is essentially the 'unlawful' vehicle registration tax (VRT).

Though built on an enlarged Corsa platform and sharing its most expensive components with some used in Astra and Vectra, 80 per cent of components are new.
