'Don't drive on hard shoulder' plea

04 March 2003: Motoring organisation RAC Ireland says vehicles driving or swerving onto the hard shoulder show a blatant disregard by some motorists both for the safety of other road users and those working on the hard shoulder.

Even when vehicles use flashing beacons and the operators wear reflective jackets, collisions and near misses are still happening.

Robert Taylor, Managing Director, RAC Ireland, said motorists need to watch out for vehicles with hazard lights or flashing beacons as this is a clear indication that there are likely to be people on the roadside ahead.

"However, motorists need to act responsibly, and instead of stopping to take a look they need to continue driving, if they are able to do so, and not cause any traffic jams or chaos to other drivers."
