Raft of European SUVs planned

25 November 2003: Renault will introduce a Megane-based SUV in 2006 or 2007, using a four-wheel-drive system from partner Nissan. It will be built in Pusan, South Korea, by Renault subsidiary Samsung. Samsung will build versions that will be sold by Renault, Nissan and Samsung.

In the second half of 2006, Volkswagen will introduce a Golf-based SUV, in a programme based on the Marrakech concept car.

New small SUVs derived from car platforms are also coming from Fiat, Audi, Volvo, Saab and Alfa-Romeo between 2004 and 2006.

The segment is expected to be worth nearly a million units annually in western Europe by 2008, compared with about 700,000 units now.

Asian brands, led by the Toyota RAV4, have dominated the segment so far.
