Saab, Subaru, in joint venture

17 April 2003: A joint venture between Saab and Subaru will provide a Saab-ised Impreza wagon to give the GM-owned brand a smaller car than the 9-3 and 9-5 in North America. The 9-2 will not initially be sold in Europe.

The 9-2 will be built in Japan for Saab and will use Subaru's 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine, while an Aero version will feature a high-performance, 2.0-liter, turbocharged Saab four-cylinder unit.

General Motors owns Saab and 20 per cent of Subaru's parent company, Fuji heavy Industries.

Designers and engineers from both companies already are working on a joint-venture model to replace the Impreza in three years' time. That second-generation 9-2, which will have a diesel-engine option, will be sold in Europe.

The first 9-2 will debut at the auto shows in Los Angeles and Detroit in January 2004.
