Speed cameras don't target black spots

27 August 2002: An investigation into the location of speed cameras in the UK has shown that more are being sited on low-risk roads than at the UK’s worst accident blackspots.

The findings come from detailed research by Autocar magazine, using the speed camera location database developed by Morpheous in conjunction with an AA study into over 830 roads nationwide.

Morpheous pinpointed the exact position of all fixed cameras in use across the UK. The company’s database experts used this information to check how many cameras are located along roads which have been highlighted as the most dangerous and those rated as the safest in an AA report, which was compiled from police accident data.

The investigation shows that 33 per cent more cameras have been positioned on the UK’s 50 safest roads than on the 50 most dangerous stretches.

If similar research was carried out in Ireland, it would likely show similar results. But the Morpheus system is not yet available to Irish motorists.
